How to caulk the inside and outside of windows

Caulking windows is a relatively easy job once you get used to using a caulking gun. The procedure for the interior and exterior of the windows is the same. If they have been caulked before, the first step is to remove the old caulking. This practice serves and has an aesthetic purpose. As the caulk around windows becomes old, it hardens, turns yellow and cracked. The result is dirty and draughty windows.

You will need

  • Utility Knife
  • Spatula
  • Soap
  • Sponge
  • Putty for interior
  • Putty for exterior
  • Caulk Gun
  • Rags

Instructions

  1. Remove the old caulk around windows. Insert the edge of a knife or spatula in a corner of the putty. Use lever to loosen it and grab it with your thumb and forefinger. Carefully remove it from the window.
  2. Clean the area with soap and water to remove traces of old caulk and other dirt and grime. The best new caulk adheres to a clean surface and this provides a better seal.
  3. Buy a caulking gun and putty in the local paint store or shop supplies for home. The latex caulk for windows works well and is easy to work with. Interior will need putty for interior and exterior windows for exterior windows. The exterior caulking is more durable and can withstand harsh temperatures and sunlight.
  4. Cut the tip of the caulk tube at an angle of 45 degrees. Put it in the caulking gun. Press the trigger to begin the flow putty and release to stop. Practice a few times if you’ve never used a caulking gun.
  5. Hold the caulking gun at the left corner of the top of the window. Pull the trigger and the gun moves along the top of the window to the right side. Release the trigger a few inches before reaching the right corner. The caulk will continue to flow for a few seconds.
  6. Gently run your finger along the line of caulk. This helps to soften the line and press more firmly in place.
  7. Clean your finger and the tip of the caulking gun with a damp cloth. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the window and then go to the next window.
